A statement from Notre Dame Alumni Makayla Vasquez:
“My 4 years at ND were hands down the best 4 years of my life so far. I think growing up in a family of Notre Dame football fans made it all that much more meaningful. Any college football fan could recognize the gold helmets and fight song in a split second but the added magic that comes with experiencing it as a student can't be put into words. Especially in the fall. Every game weekend started on Thursday night when alumni and fans started flooding campus ahead of the game. There were always too many events on campus to keep up with, but I made it a point to experience all of them at least once. Pep rallies, student concerts, trumpets under the dome, midnight drummer circle on God quad, campus tours, stadium tours. It was crazy talking to alumni and hearing how little has changed since their time on campus, and I think that perfectly exemplifies what makes Notre Dame what it is: tradition. So much of the magic is rooted in the fact that none of it ever gets old. No matter how many games you go to, no matter how long ago you graduated, no matter what. It's the Notre Dame way. And one of the most iconic parts of it all is the leprechaun. To me and to so many others, the leprechaun mascot represents the student body, especially when you consider that the mascot has a new face every year. I remember actually attending leprechaun tryouts my senior year and seeing how hype everyone got just for tryouts. The players on the team, the students in the stands, the fans at home all love to see that extension of ourselves on the field every game. I have been an ND fan my whole life and will be for the rest of it, and can't imagine the tradition and culture without that one integral piece of the puzzle.”
