Tarot and Rabbits

Listen Later

Welcome to Season 12 of Every Day Tarot! This season, we’re exploring the sacred bond between the tarot and our animal allies.

Animals are ancient storytellers. They whisper truths about our intuition, reflecting our fears and desires, guiding us through cycles of change, and reminding us of the wild magic woven into the natural world.

In this episode, we talk about the rabbit—a creature of gentle demeanor, fertility, and explosive bursts of energy. Often associated with spring, the moon, and the underworld, the rabbit invites us to embrace softness without surrendering power, to act even when afraid, and to honor the wisdom that comes from stillness and speed in equal measure.

Let’s dig into their lore, their tarot appearances, and the lessons they bring when they show up in your life (or your deck!)

Rabbits Symbolism in Myth & Magic

Rabbits are soft-bodied but highly attuned creatures. They freeze when threatened—a reminder that stillness can be a survival skill. But when they run, they zigzag—swift, unpredictable, intuitive. The rabbit reminds us that vulnerability is not a weakness, and we don’t have to let fear lead.

Across cultures and traditions, rabbits appear as tricksters, guides, and sacred messengers of gods and goddesses. In folklore and magical practice, they represent:

  • New beginnings and spring energy

  • Timidity and overthinking

  • Fertility and reproduction

  • Abundance and growth

  • Moon and underworld connections

In magic and witchcraft, rabbit fur may be used in spell-work for prosperity, quick change, or protection. Their burrows remind us to dig inward—to build shelter, to rest, to incubate what matters.

Tarot Cards Featuring Rabbit Energy:

While not common across all decks, rabbits appear in several key tarot archetypes—especially those grounded in the physical world. Their energy pops up symbolically, even when they’re not pictured directly.

  • Queen of Pentacles (Sasuraibito Tarot) The rabbit is most famously featured in the Queen of Pentacles card. This version cradles two rabbits in her arms. Behind her are towering sprigs of rosemary. The scene is lush and full, reminding us that caretaking is sacred, and soft power is still power.

  • Knight of Wands (Anima Mundi Tarot) In this deck, the Knight is depicted as a jackrabbit: long-limbed, wide-eyed, and ready to leap. Here, rabbit energy shifts into boldness. This Knight is the risk-taker, the trailblazer, the intuitive sprinter who doesn’t wait for perfect timing.

💭 Today's Tarot Pull:

From It’s Grow Time oracle deck by Chantel Davis Gray, I pulled “Work at a small business coffee shop.”

A sweet reminder to change your environment, seek out quiet community, and allow new energy to enter your life. Just like rabbits find comfort in familiar burrows, sometimes we thrive in safe and cozy spaces. Try working somewhere new, sipping something warm, and listening for whispers of inspiration.

Reflective prompts on this card:

  • Where in your life are you being asked to move quickly, and where might you need to pause and burrow?

  • Is there a project or dream you're ready to multiply like rabbits?

  • What would it look like to embrace your soft parts and still feel powerful?
