The Things the Military Took From Me — Part 2: The Man I Did Not Recognize
Content note: This episode discusses trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and mental health.
What happens when the uniform becomes your identity… and you no longer recognize the person underneath it?
After Episode 6, I received a deeply personal message from a Black man still serving in the military. His story made me realize we weren't finished with this conversation.
He shared how years of service shaped his identity, emotional well-being, relationships, and sense of self. From the pressure to accomplish the mission to confronting trauma, seeking help, and accepting accountability, his story explores the cost of becoming everything the military needs you to be.
This episode isn't about blaming the military. It's about recognizing what our experiences have taken from us, acknowledging how our actions may have affected others, and finding the courage to reclaim ourselves.
Because recognizing what the military took from you is only part of the story. The other part is deciding who you want to become next.

I joined the Army at 17 and retired at 37. Twenty years of service shaped the woman I became, but not without a cost.
The Army gave me discipline, leadership, resilience, and a career I'm incredibly proud of. But it also took some things I didn't recognize until much later: my patience, my peace, precious moments with my family, and sometimes my ability to simply be present.
In this episode, I'm getting raw and unfiltered about the pressure to succeed, the weight of always being the strong one, learning to ask for help, and the military habits I had to unlearn after retirement.
Because you can be proud of what you've accomplished and still acknowledge what it cost you.
The uniform came off. But the lessons—and some of the struggles—came home with me.
I'm Tasmeen, and this is Tasmeen Speaks.

Friends, friends, friends. 👀
We use that word a lot—but what actually makes somebody a real friend?
Is it how long you've known them? How often you talk? Who shows up when life gets hard? Or maybe who can genuinely celebrate you when life gets good?
In this episode, we're talking about friendship, loyalty, emotional safety, outgrowing people, surviving different seasons—and the things we wish our friends would just understand without us having to say them.
Because we've probably all thought:
“You should've known.”
You should've known I needed you.
You should've known I wasn't okay.
You should've known that hurt me.
But then comes the uncomfortable question:
Did I actually tell you?
There's a difference between expecting our friends to know us and expecting them to read our minds. And there's also a difference between someone not knowing what you need—and someone you've told repeatedly who still chooses not to show up.
And before we make a list of everything our friends should be doing for us, we're turning the mirror around:
Am I being the kind of friend I'm asking everybody else to be?

Can you really be friends with your ex? 👀
For me, the answer is: It depends.
How did we become exes? Was the breakup mutual? Did we simply grow apart? Or did you lie, cheat, betray me, or completely break my heart?
Because there's a difference between “we're cool” and “that's my friend.”
In this episode, we're talking about accountability vs. apologies, staying “friends” when somebody still wants the relationship, boundaries when someone new enters the picture, and the uncomfortable question: Are you really friends with your ex—or are you still emotionally attached?
And then we turn the whole conversation around…
What if YOU were the one who broke their heart?
Because forgiveness doesn't automatically mean access.
I don't think every ex has to become an enemy. But I also don't believe everybody deserves continued access to me just because I once loved them.

Are we expecting too much from a man… or have we finally stopped accepting too little? 👀
A listener sent me that question, and baby… we had to talk about it.
In this episode, we get into communication, consistency, grace, dating potential, emotional loneliness, and the difference between having healthy standards and expecting someone to love you exactly the way you imagined.
But here's where it gets complicated:
What if you're not asking for too much?
What if he's not a bad man?
What if two people genuinely care about each other, but simply have different definitions of what “enough” looks like?
Sometimes the issue isn't love. Sometimes it's compatibility.
🎙️ So I want to know: Are we expecting too much from a man?
And what's one thing you need in a relationship that you're no longer willing to call “too much” just because somebody else can't give it to you?
Tell it. Don't wear it. 🖤

What happens when the person you pictured forever with suddenly becomes someone you have to learn how to let go?
In this episode, Tasmeen gets raw about loving someone deeply, building a life together, and watching the future she thought was certain unravel in a way she never saw coming.
But this isn't a story told from the other side of heartbreak.
She's still in it.
Still healing. Still missing him. Still making peace with what happened—and learning that choosing yourself doesn't always mean you've stopped loving someone.
Sometimes a person can be a beautiful part of your story and still not be the person who finishes it with you.
🎙️ Have you ever had to let go of someone you thought you'd spend your life with?

You don't know my name. You don't know my face. And that's the point.
In the first episode of Tasmeen Speaks, I'm introducing myself without actually telling you who I am.
We're talking about why I chose anonymity, why this space exists, and why some of the most honest conversations happen when we stop worrying about who's listening.
From military life and relationships to heartbreak, healing, love, identity, and everything in between—nothing is off the table.
So here's my first question for you:
What is something you've been carrying that you've never said out loud?
Tell it. Don't wear it.
