Tata Nano to be converted to mini ICUs across India

Listen Later

Tata Motors has made a startling announcement to help in India’s fight against the COVID19 virus by offering to convert all Tata Nanos newer than 2009 into a portable ICU bed with Oxygen and other medical equipment. This modification is planned to be undertaken at the Sanand plant which currently builds the Tata Tigor and Tiago.
The Tata Nano was a much talked about car at launch with its purchase price of INR 1,00,000 making it one of the cheapest cars in the world. The car ran into issues early in its lifetime when the factory had to be shifted from Singur in West Bengal to the current location in Gujrat. This delayed the launch and hurt its prospects for advance bookings.
This was followed by a negative perception among the Indian public that the car is unsafe due to its low cost and innovative cost-cutting tactics. This was not helped by multiple reports of the car catching fire across the country. It also became the symbol of cheapness on the Indian roads for no fault of its own. The car was a pretty decent one at that price and the fact is that even the first car, Ford Model T, was far more expensive than a Nano.
The Nano production was officially stopped in August 2018 after repeated poor sales and the company producing only 1 car in June 2018. Tata Motors continues to enjoy great success through its other models on the market and has also built the reputation for having some of the safest cars on Indian roads.
The Tatas have always been known for their philanthropic nature and have contributed to society every time it was needed for someone to step up. They are known to be extremely employee-friendly and are usually a part of or behind powerful CSR initiatives within the country. Ratan Tata, the current Chairman Emeritus of the Tata Group is a well known and highly respected businessman by young and old alike.
There was even a Twitter campaign in the recent past which was to convince the government to confer Ratan Tata with the highest civilian award in the country, the Bharat Ratna. Ratan Tata himself appealed on social media to discontinue the campaign as he was happy to contribute to society without any formal award.
Taking a cue from Anand Mahindra to convert Mahindra Boleros into mini ambulances, our sources within the Tata motors executive committee has informed us that there are plans to buy back old Tata Nanos to convert them into portable ICU’s with oxygen. The cars will be modified at the facility in Sanand, Gujrat and the buyback is expected to begin next week.
