*note of correction* - I mentioned that it could take years for the literary agent to negotiate contract terms with a publishing company's lawyer. While that might be true in some cases, it also can be completed within months. A publishing company will also have their own editors look through your work and any changes before release, in addition to other factors, is what could potentially take a year or so.
