TCR032 | Jessica Humphrey: Finding Peace on the Run

Listen Later

I’m happy to bring Jessica Humphrey from Racing to Zen to you today.

What first caught my attention about Jessica’s site was the name. Jessica and I both share a passion for finding peace on the run.

Jessica is a mother, wife, urban teacher, runner, daughter, sister and friend who often forgets to “put her own oxygen mask on first.” Her blog documents her journey to running her first marathon on May 19, 2013 and her running adventures thereafter.

On May 23, 2012, she lost her dad to complications from diabetes and heart disease. she ran the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon on May 19, 2013 to honor his memory and to push herself to put my health first in a long list of life responsibilities. All too often she found myself exhausted, ill and frustrated with life in general, only to realize that her work for my career, my family and her home had  come first, rather than the work of caring for herself.

She started running in 2008 and completed the Couch to 5K program, running my first race in May of that year. Along the way, she discovered that she is a runner at heart and has  since completed two marathons, seven half marathons, two triathlons and a variety of other road races.

In this episode you’ll learn about:
  • Becoming a real runner
  • When she started running
  • Her weight loss journey
  • The couch to 5k program
  • The power of community
  • From not being an athlete to becoming hooked on running
  • Those first few runs
  • Running to change her life and
  • Running from stress and depression
  • Overcoming fear
  • Run less run faster
