It’s Not About You

  • The first thing to remember is that people’s actions are not about you, what you did or said.

  • People’s actions are about what they’re thinking. Their actions are not a reflection of anything wrong with you, but about what they’re going through/what’s on their mind.

  • What’s on their mind is filtered through their experiences and their beliefs.

  • This includes ourselves. Our actions are never about the other person. They’re always about what we’re thinking and feeling.

  • Emotional Maturity

    • Not every action deserves a reaction.

    • People’s actions don’t require nor beg our opinion.

    • We can be the observer without getting knee deep in the drama.

    • The more we remain drama free the happier and more in control we are.

    • Problem Solving

      • When students show moodiness or misbehavior we need to remain the adult in the room.

      • We can hold our ground (and our boundaries) and be flexible with moody students.

      • It serves us well to remember that students’ behavior is not about us.

      • Taking care of yourself is deeply personal. The more you know yourself the better you’d be able to take care of yourself. This may include something as serious as setting boundaries or as simple as making sure you take naps. Whatever your needs are, make sure to acknowledge and validate them. They’re important. They matter.
