Tell me whats wrong with this statement:   

“We’re doing roundabouts today” sounds like a plan, but it often leaves learners unclear on what they’re trying to improve or how to judge success, its telling not engaging the student in the plan setting and lacks definition - as we all know - Roundabouts as a theme includes a host of skills, processes and decision-making skills.   

However, in contrast with the above approach, a meaningful briefing/conversation with the student, about the skills involved in a particular subject or theme can make it clear and result in setting student-owned targets for the lesson and a clear mutually agreed plan.  

And when things change during the lesson, again, meaningful unpacking and conversation can easily lead to resetting the goals and /or plan as required with the student. This is a world away from simply telling/directing what is to be done that day and requires active engagement with the student.  

We walk through how to pull meaningful goals from a pupil without putting words in their mouth or using instructor jargon which the student probably does not understand, nor has a connection to what is actually going to be covered and how!. 

The shift is simple but powerful: set goals around skills, not subjects. Roundabouts become approach speed, lane position, observations, signalling choices, and decision making. 

Meeting traffic becomes a discussion and focus on its elements like planning and anticipation, confidence, and safe positioning. When you name the underlying skills, you can discuss them with the student, set meaningful SMART Goals that you revisit during the lesson and debrief them so pupil can feel a real part of the learning process and plan. 

We also tackle the tricky moment when a pupil wants something too advanced. We share a framework for checking where they are in the syllabus, identifying the gaps, and guiding them toward the next best step while keeping safety front and centre. Along the way, we talk about chunking lessons with short reflect and review check-ins so goals stay alive throughout the drive and the debrief ends with clear wins and next steps.

Your lesson plan meets the real world, and the real world wins. We sit down as a training team to talk through what examiners actually want to see in SC1 lesson planning, especially for a standards check or ADI Part 3, and how to stay calm and purposeful when the drive doesn’t follow your original plan. If you’ve ever wondered how to prove your lesson plan is pupil-focused while still reacting to what’s happening on the road, this conversation is built for you. 

We dig into the skill that separates a rigid script from professional instruction: adapting the lesson in a way that still moves the learner toward clear, agreed-upon learning goals. Using practical driving examples, we talk about what to do when a meeting traffic session gets derailed because mirror discipline drops off, and how changing the environment or lowering the difficulty can free up mental capacity without abandoning the objective. We also cover when the right move is to reset goals completely, because honesty and clarity matter more than pretending the original plan still fits. 

Another thread is reading the learner, not just the road. We talk about the telltale signs of stress in the car, when to pull over and have a chat, and how your level of support should flex throughout the lesson. We also highlight the core principle behind strong driving lesson planning: it must be based on what the student needs, negotiated with them, and matched to a suitable practice area.

The first of three exams is the Theory Exam.  The details of the exam are outlined in full on . Gov (link below.  

The key to success is having the right revision package - DVSA and Drive Hart recommend the Safe Driving for Life instructors' package. 

The other key recommendations are:  

1. Know the exam elements - you have to pass both multiple choice and Hazard perception on the same sitting.  

2. Understand how it is marked - there are 4 bands or categories in multiple choice, which you have to revise for. 

3.  Ensure you do adequate revision and make sure this includes the publications outlined on.Gov for this test, especially the Essential Skills book  

4.  Do at least 10 or more complete mock tests (at pass level ) to be confident on the test day.

Becoming a driving instructor in the UK is a structured process, clearly outlined on the official GOV.UK website. This episode gives you a quick overview of the key stages, from initial registration through to taking (and preparing for) the three qualifying exams.

Once you know you meet the eligibility rules, your next step is to get an enhanced DBS check if you don’t already have a recent, valid one for ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) purposes.
