Teaching Your Child To Appreciate Diversity

Listen Later

What happens when your child encounters someone who is different from them? Do they ask embarrassing or potentially hurtful questions? Do you usher them away as quickly as you can to explain why that wasn't the right thing to do? For a moment, what if we entertained the idea that perhaps allowing your child to ask questions and interact with people who are different than them could create learning opportunities beyond what we can give them? Asking that man why he lost his leg, or asking that woman why she's so short may not be so bad. Think about it, most of these people have been dealing with these adversities for most of their life, and an inquisitive child is unlikely to hurt their feelings, but the experience of learning from and getting to know someone new could have a huge impact on the eleven of acceptance and tolerance your child has toward others!
