Topic Discussed : Global Powertrain Outlook, 2019
Speakers : Arvind Noel Xavier Leo
Key Takeaways:
The shares of diesel engines stood at 36.4% in Europe - down from 44.3% in 2017 - impacted by anti-diesel sentiment, a faster drift towards e-mobility, and the expansion of gasoline hybrid powertrains. As WLTP testing and urban restriction coming in for diesel engines it is expected that the diesel share in Europe will decline to 30-32% in 2019, whereas SCR and heated catalysts will be implemented on diesel engines to comply with regulations.
Final package of WLTP was finalized and has failed to be implemented from September 2018, but OEMs have begun dual testing, whereas ICE engines will require SCR/GPF to comply. OEMs will adopt standardized technical services to test and issue test results that will be monitored by regulatory authorities. This will result in reduced emissions for newly launched vehicles and also will create awareness among consumers.
In a shift from diesel, VW will be among the first OEMs to introduce a mainstream EV, with a range of up to 373 miles followed by Daimler, BMW and Renault Nissan.
Of the 325,925 BEVs and PHEVs were sold in Europe—second only to China (980,000 units).
Automakers are meeting with success on advanced powertrain technologies such as variable compression ratio, GDi Engines, heated catalytic converter, Outlook-Gasoline Spark Controlled Compression Ignition and integrated SCR system.
