Think Brick

Tech Talk: Masonry Durability

Listen Later

As one of the oldest building materials, bricks remain strong and looks better with age, like fine wine. Bricks have kept Australian homes safe, comfortable and protect against many extreme climates.

In this episode, your host Elizabeth McIntyre and Think Brick’s knowledgeable senior structural engineer, Michael Koungras will explore the durability of masonry products, how this durability is rigorously tested through tests such as the salt attack test, and the various environments throughout Australia that products need to be durable enough to withstand.

The podcast incorporates the following topics:

  • The distance of your home or building from a non-surf and/or surf coast can effect the products used
  • The 5 exposure environments and their requirements in accordance with AS3700 (section 5)
  • The definition of a surf coast and a non-surf coast and what this means in terms of the durability of the products used
  • Salt attack testing of bricks
  • The grading system of the durability of bricks
  • The classes of mortar to use in the different exposure environments and the process of how to test this
  • The built-in components and making sure they have adequate corrosion resistance
