Time for another DevNews with Ken Rimple and Sujan Kapadia! This week’s news items include machine learning with K, Lambdas for Excel, NodeJS race conditions, and some controversy bubbling around certain Chromium features.

  • Philly ETE Conference is back for 2021, and Alan Kay is our first keynote! Other notable speakers include Kent Beck, Jessica Kerr, David Nolen, and more. We’ll be virtual again this year – get your Early Bird tickets before February 15, 2020 for only $70.
  • Kicking off DevNews with last week’s major Verizon outage that cancelled our show on 1/26. We’ve never seen DownDetector look like that. Unlike lots of other vendors, Verizon is mum about it.
  • On the sustainability front: Shell buys UK’s largest electric vehicle charging network.
  • Very simple machine learning with K tutorial on Toptal using the nearest neighbor algorithm (instead of regression or neural networks). Based on scikit-learn, it ends with a simple React/Python Flask app to draw and recognize digits.
  • Excel now has Lambda functions (and let statements), allowing functional programming, and more!
  • The (small) list of ECMAScript 2021.
  • Show and tell! Ken bought the Arduino challenger microcontroller from Raspberry Pi – The Pico. We had to laugh because the book is 3x the price of the unit.
  • NodeJS Race conditions, a quick guide.
  • Chromium features being removed to only exist in Chrome, Fedora Chromium maintainer asks to switch to FireFox.
