Of course, a lot of people think they already know the proper answer to the question, 물론 많은 사람들이 자신들이 문제에 맞는 답을 벌써 알고 있다고 생각합니다.
“What is beauty?” 아름다움이란 무엇인가?
It’s in the eye of the beholder. 보는 사람의 마음에 달려 있다던가,
It’s whatever moves you personally. 뭐든 개인적으로 마음에 드는 것일 수도 있겠죠.
Or, as some people, especially academics prefer, 또는 어떤 사람들이 – 특히 학구적인 사람들이 선호하듯
beauty is in the culturally conditioned eye of the beholder. 아름다움은 문화에 의해 조성된 마음에 달려있다 던가와 같이 말이죠.
People agree that paintings or movies or music are beautiful 사람들은 그림이나 영화, 음악이 아름답다고 동의하는데,
because their cultures determine a uniformity of aesthetic taste. 왜냐면 그들의 문화가 같은 미의 기준을 세우기 때문이죠. (Uniformity – 한결같음, 균일)
Taste for both natural beauty and for the arts 자연의 미와 예술의 미의 기준은
travel across cultures with great ease. 문화들 사이를 자유롭게 이동합니다.
Beethoven is adored in Japan. 베토벤은 일본에서 사랑받고 있습니다
Peruvians love Japanese woodblock prints. 페루인들은 일본의 목판 인쇄물을 좋아하죠.
Inca sculptures are regarded as treasures in British museums, 잉카 조각상들은 영국박물관들에서 보물로 대접받고, (안데스 문명 최후의 국명 및 그 지배 계층을 잉카라고 한다.)
while Shakespeare is translated into every major language of the Earth. 셰익스피어의 작품들은 지구의 주요 언어로 모두 번역되어있어요
Or just think about American jazz or American movies – they go everywhere. 아니면 미국 재즈나 미국 영화만해도 어디든 다 있죠.
There are many differences among the arts, 예술엔 많은 차이점이 있지만,
but there are also universal, cross-cultural aesthetic pleasures and values.
보편적이고 문화를 뛰어넘은 미적 기쁨과 가치가 있죠.
