TED - Margaret Heffernan: The dangers of "willful blindness”
This wasn’t ignorance. It was willful blindness. 사람들이 무지해서 그런 것이 아닙니다. 의도적으로 외면했기 때문입니다.
Willful blindness is a legal concept 의도적 외면은 법률 용어입니다.
which means if there’s information that you could know and you should know 알 수 있고, 알아야 하는 어떤 정보가 있어도
but you somehow manage not to know, 어떤 이유로든 모르게 되면
the law deems that you’re willfully blind. 법률상 의도적으로 외면한 것으로 간주합니다.
You have chosen not to know. 모르기를 자처한 것입니다.
There’s a lot of willful blindness around these days.
의도적 외면은 요즘 사회에 만연해 있습니다.
You can see willful blindness in banks, 은행에서도 찾아볼 수 있죠.
when thousands of people sold mortgages to people who couldn’t afford them. 갚지도 못할 사람들에게 담보대출을 해주는 수천 명의 사람들,
You could see them in banks
when interest rates were manipulated
and everyone around knew what was going on 은행에 있는 모든 사람들은 이자율이 조작되고 어떤 일이 일어나고 있는지 알면서도
but everyone studiously ignored it. 끈질기게 모른척 하는것이죠. (학문을 좋아하는, 애써 ~하는)
You can see willful blindness in the Catholic Church 의도적 외면은 가톨릭 교회에서도 찾아 볼 수 있습니다.
where decades of child abuse went ignored. 수십년 동안 아동 학대를 못 본 체 하고 있죠.
You could see willful blindness in the run-up to the Iraq War. 이라크 전쟁의 준비 기간에도 의도적 외면이 있었습니다. (비행기의 엔진 회전 점검, 주식 시장에서의 가격 상승)
Willful blindness exists on epic scales like those 의도적 외면은 말씀드린 사례들에서 처럼 큰 규모로 존재하기도 (대작, 웅장한)
and it also exist on very small scales, 작은 사건들에도 존재합니다.
in people’s families in people homes and communities, 가정에서, 집에서, 사회에서,
and particularly in organizations and institutions.
그리고 특히 단체와 기관에서도 존재합니다.
