One of the most common ones is happiness and pleasure. 가장 흔한 예가 행복을 쾌락과 혼동하는 경우입니다.
But if you look at the characteristics of those two, pleasure is contingent upon time, upon its object, upon the place. 하지만 이 둘의 성격을 가만히 살펴보면, 쾌락은 시간과 장소, 그리고 대상에 의해 좌지우지됨을 알 수 있습니다.
(contingent - ~여부 contingent upon - ~에 달려 있는)
It is something that – changes of nature. 그 자체로 영원 불변하는 건 아니지요.
Beautiful chocolate cake; first serving is delicious, second one not so much, then, we feel disgust. 예를 들어 보기에도 좋은 초콜릿 케익이 있어요. 처음 한 접시는 맛나지요. 그 다음건 전만 못하고요. 나중엔 넌덜머리가 나요.
That’s the nature of things. 세상 일이란게 대게 그렇습니다.
We get tired. 질리게 마련이죠.
I used to be a fan of Bach. I used to play it on the guitar, you know. 저는 한 때 바흐의 팬이었습니다. 기타로 그의 곡을 연주하기도 했죠.
I can hear it two, three, five times. 두세번 까지도 들을 수 있었습니다.
If I had to hear it 24 hours, non-stop it might be very tiring.
하지만 24시간 논스톱으로 들어야 한다면 매우 질리겠죠.
If you are feeling very cold you come near a fire, it’s so wonderful. 당신이 추울 때, 가까이에서 불을 쬐면 그렇게 좋을 수 없겠죠.
Then, after some moments, you just go a little back, and then it starts burning. 하지만 좀 있다가 한 발짝 물러서게 되구요, 더 있다가는 살이 타는 듯 하기 시작합니다 .
It sort of uses itself as you experience it. 당신이 경험할 수록 쾌락은 소모되는 것입니다.
And also, again it can – also it’s something that you –
it’s not something that is radiating outside. 또한 쾌락이 전염성이 있는 것은 아닙니다. (radiate – 내뿜다, 빛과 열을 내뿜다)
Like you can feel intense pleasure and some other around you can be suffering a lot.
마치 당신이 진한 쾌락을 느끼는 반면, 몇몇 주변 사람들은 심하게 고통 받을 수도 있는 것 처럼요.
