Now, I tell you this story about summer camp. 제가 여름 캠프에 대한 이야기를 했는데요,

I could have told you 50 others just like it – 저는 이런 이야기를 50개는 더 할 수 있습니다.

all the times that I got the message 항상 제가 들은 이야기는

that somehow my quiet and introverted style of being 왜 그런진 모르겠지만, 조용하고 내성적인 성향은

was not necessarily the right way to go, 올바른 방법은 아니었고,

that I should be trying to pass as more of an extrovert. 그때마다 저는 더 외향적인것처럼 해야만 했습니다.

And I always sensed deep down that this was wrong 그리고 항상 이런 생각은 잘 못 되었다고 생각하면서

and that introverts were pretty excellent just as they were. 내성적인면은 그 자체로 아주 좋은면이라고 생각했습니다.

But for years I denied this intuition, 하지만 수년간 이런 저의 직관을 거부했죠,

and so I became a Wall Street lawyer, of all things, 그래서 저는 월스트리트의 변호사가 되었습니다.

instead of the writer that I had always longed to be – 오랫동안 바래왔던 작가의 길을 가는대신 –

partly because I needed to prove to myself that I could be bold and assertive too. 제가 용감하고 적극적이라는 것을 증명할 필요도 일부는 있었습니다.

And I was always going off to crowded bars 그리고 저는 사람이 많은 술집으로 가곤 했습니다.

when I really would have preferred to just have a nice dinner with friends. 원래는 친구들과 근사한 저녁을 먹고 싶었는데도요.

And I made these self-negating choices so reflexively, 그리고 아주 반사적으로 자기 무력화하는 선택을 했는데요,

that I wasn't even aware that I was making them. 제가 그러고 있다는 것 조차도 모르고 있었습니다.
