I don't remember the first time I ever heard this quote, but it was one of those that stopped me in my tracks and got me thinking, trying to figure out exactly what it meant. I have used it ever since then as a great message for young people (and old people, too) to not get so caught up in comparing themselves to others, yet to use comparison as a means to drive yourself to become the best you that you can become.
