It told the story of an alcoholic single mother and her children living in a Glasgow tenement in the 1990s. His new novel, "Young Mungo" centers on a romance between two teenage boys - one Protestant, one Catholic. It is a gripping and revealing story about the meaning of masculinity, the push and pull of family, the violence faced by so many queer people, and the dangers of loving someone too much. In this interview we talk about growing up in Glasgow, how writing became his second career and why he named his main character after the patron saint of Glasgow.
