Four days until spring, rainy and cold, and Matt’s back after missing Thursday and Friday last week—conflicts got in the way, and sometimes it just doesn’t happen. After sharing trivia about The Scarlet Letter being published (1850) and Barnum and Bailey Circus debuting in NYC (1881), he dives into what’s been on his mind: the feeling of not doing enough. Not “I’m not enough,” but “there’s just so much more to do.” He’s been head down working, working, working, and still it feels like it’s not enough.
Here’s the reframe: it’s a season of planting, tilling the soil, working the fields. Like his friend in the wine business who’s virtually gone in October and November—nobody begrudges him because that’s just the season. Matt’s trying to go easy on himself for being late to reply to people, for not talking to certain folks for longer periods. You’re going to miss a few things, and that’s okay as long as you’re not missing the most important things. That’s why prioritization matters. On the flip side, he caught an off-Broadway show last week and drove out to the Jersey Shore yesterday (literally past Snooki’s shop—never watched the show, but it permeated the culture). The season isn’t open yet, parking was free, had great food, saw the water. One day, and he feels rested and rejuvenated. In the race of the tortoise and the hare, he’s trying to be more tortoise-like—just sustain and keep going.
