Tenille Seow is an Australian author passionate about creating accessible fantasy stories for younger readers. When Tenille picked up a popular young adult fantasy novel in 2023, she expected to be swept into the story. Instead, she found herself struggling with difficult character names, strong language, and mature content that didn’t feel appropriate for younger readers. That moment sparked an idea: what if there were a book that sat comfortably between middle grade and young adult fiction—one that still offered magic, tension, and romance, but without explicit content? Tenille decided to write it herself. The Light Within, the first book in what she plans to develop as a series, was released in March.
In this episode of Not the Plot, Tenille chats with host Teena Raffa-Mulligan about overcoming challenges, finding her own path, being open to opportunities and learning on the go as she pursues her publishing dream. She also shares what a special fountain pen means to her.
