KPFA - Terra Verde

Terra Verde – August 30, 2013

Listen Later

Adaptive Urbanism is a concept that is gaining currency among city planners and dwellers worldwide. Instead of seeing the city’s design as an ‘end state’ and aiming toward that final vision, it calls for an ongoing process of engagement and reiteration, inviting public participation and feedback in a collaborative, flexible process. Today on our show we’ll explore how this concept is connected to a rise of pedestrian plazas and the broader effort to create safer and more welcoming places in cities for people who are not in cars. Iris Starr of the City of Oakland’s Public Works Agency and Matthew Passmore of Rebar Art & Design Studio discuss the case of Latham Square Plaza.
