Tester afraid to share coding progress on linkedin

I was teaching a tester to become a developer and this is his story.

  • One of the best way to become a web-app developer, is to do some tough coding challenge like #100DaysOfCode and share or all social network including LinkedIn.
  • But people from different background like production support and testing are afraid to share the progress on LinkedIn.
  • I was teaching a tester, who wanted to get into development and as like most people was having 100 connections on LinkedIn.
  • But it included his manager and colleagues also. He told me that if his manager will know that he is learning to code then he will get more work and even can loose his job.
  • These micro-managing things are very bad, but do happen in India. When a person is tagged with a role, he is Β considered to do it for the rest of his life.
  • Now rest of life is not possible in role like testing and production support, where a fresher also have a same knowledge as a experienced testers.
  • So, what we did. I suggested him to create a new profile of him with older photo and not mention the current company.
  • He started learning from me and did #100DaysOfCode for 30 days with daily posting. His new profile grew to 1000 connections within 1 month.
  • But he left after 1 month and learning only HTML, CSS, JS. He never told me what happened. But i know life took over.
