Indication

treatment of infection, gonorrhea and syphilis with penicillin allergy, chronic bronchitis

Action

bacteriostatic by inhibiting protein synthesis

• use caution with liver impairment • may cause pseudomembranous colitis, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, photosensitivity, rash • may increase effects of warfarin • assess for infection • obtain culture prior to initiating therapy • monitor renal and liver labs • instruct patient to complete entire dose
