Texting from Beyond: The Night Kate Disappeared

A successful, careful 32-year-old got ready for a date one evening. By three the next morning, a man was leading police through a dark Hertfordshire woodland to show them where he had left her body. In between, her phone kept sending texts to her friends — but the words didn't sound like her. Who was holding Kate's phone?

In this episode, we analyze the murder of Kate Beagley in England. We examine the date that turned deadly, the impersonated text messages meant to delay the alarm, the car cleaned before dawn, and the confession that led police to her body. When the only person who knows where she is calmly answers the phone, how long can a performance hold?

Victim: Kate Beagley
Age: 32 years old
Date: May 30, 2007
Location: Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, England
Perpetrator: Carl Taylor
Outcome: Convicted; life with a minimum of 30 years

- Kate Beagley, a 32-year-old compliance manager, went on a date with a man she knew as "Carl" on May 30, 2007, and never came home.
- After killing her, he used her phone to text her friends, but the unfamiliar phrasing made them realize someone else was impersonating her.
- He drove to his mother's home before dawn in Kate's car and was cleaning it, while telling police on the phone that Kate had been fine when they parted.
- Carl Taylor confessed during interrogation and led detectives at 3 a.m. to her washed body hidden in Oxey Woods.
- The court found the murder premeditated and motivated by theft of her car; Taylor got life with a 30-year minimum, and a letter he wrote her family was intercepted.
