I have to admit, I wasn’t going to do an episode on the iPad mini. It didn’t impress me that much. However when I found out they updated to the 4th generation iPad, it jumped on my radar.

Details of 4th Generation iPad

The new iPad gains two main features – the newer A6x processor with graphics acceleration and the lightning connector port. Good reasons for an iPad2 owner to upgrade but not much for a 3rd gen iPad owner.

The new iPad will most likely benchmark just like the iPhone 5 did – 2x faster than the iPad 3. The improved Wifi also will allow for better connections in coffee shops and at home in those odd spots the Wifi cannot get to.

The new iPad 4 doesn’t have many upgrades other than that. However, in-app bookstore gets some additional features such as continuous scrolling (rather than page flipping) and multi-language features.

Why I am not Impressed with iPad Mini

The biggest reason is the mini has an A5 processor – the same as the 3rd generation iPad. While it’s a great chip, Apple just put the A6x into the 4th gen ipad and cannot do the same for the mini?

I am guessing it was to save some money and sell at $329. Still I have never seen Apple move backwards to appease the customer. This is literally a first.

Eric Schilling said the mini is easier to hold in your hand. That would be well and good if I didn’t put it in a case. If I want to protect my iPad mini (especially if I use it in business), I will most likely be putting a case around the iPad which will make it bulkier. So this argument is null and void.

I knew it wasn’t going to meet the Kindle prices. Apple doesn’t have to do that. I am glad it wasn’t an 8 GB model – that was 2 years ago.

With Microsoft Surface and new tablets coming Monday, we’ll see if the mini was the right choice for Apple, or if Steve Jobs was right – it doesn’t make sense to have an iPad mini…
