As of 2023, humans have only explored 5% of the world's ocean and mapped 24.9% of the seafloor using high-resolution technology. This means that 95% of the ocean is still unknown. That unknown is partly to blame for humankind’s apparent uneasiness with the ocean for the entirety of our history, the other part is due to the ocean’s ability to show us just how small we are in comparison to that dark blue world where anything could be lurking in its depths.
