Things happen to us that seem to cause us suffering. Someone might steal a prized possession, a friend might let us down when we really want their support, or people don’t accommodate us in our peculiarities.
Soon after having our phone stolen, we are much more aware of our surroundings, gaining street smarts. When a friend doesn’t support us in that moment, we understand our own independence. When our family doesn’t accommodate us, we find that they have also stopped enabling our bad habits.
The indifference of others might even seem evil to us in the moment. Upon reflection, those indifferent folks were agents of change, and agents of growth.
