And I responded, briefly
A few days ago, after I shuttled my folks to a doctor’s visit, I was drawn over to Old City Park to finally face what had been haunting me since completing Call & Response.
My folks were curious too.
Turns out I slid into a delivery entrance and was told to pull around where normal cars park, but I didn’t plan to stay long at all. Just grab some photos and leave.
Knowing this was the home of people who brutalized people turns my stomach. That people still host weddings here is even more revolting (and on that “lawn”?).
Knowing that it was displaced by a building that edifies and empowers people is the only thing that makes me glad.
Not even my parents wanted to get out of the car. We’d seen enough.
This is just some of the history that is in my forthcoming book, but I’m convinced that it’s the science and leadership theory in it that will keep you glued.
Oh, and then there is what one pre-reader said to me, “and then you’re running around in it [as a little girl] hiding in bathrooms.” 😆
There is some incredible storytelling in there too. You will have all the feels.
