Around the Corner (Sêng-Gān)

The 100% Responsibility & Metaphysical Death Penalty

Listen Later

The death penalty is an extreme form of punishment that demands an individual bear 100% responsibility for their actions. Yet in reality, our behaviors are often shaped by societal frameworks and the expectations of others, making it difficult to claim they arise purely from free will.

If full responsibility cannot be clearly established, how can such an absolute punishment be justified?

Is the death penalty merely a tool for preserving state interests? When confronted with acts of violence, are we truly concerned with institutional order—or is it emotion and a sense of justice that drive us?

You’re invited to reflect: Why do we punish? And how should we define responsibility?
