Have you ever worked so hard to build a business that you started losing yourself along the way?
In his late 20s, Matt experienced complete professional burnout. He knows what it's like to keep pushing, tick the boxes and still feel as though something isn't quite right.
After more than two decades mentoring and coaching people, he's noticed a pattern. Sometimes it's not that we're doing too little. It's that we're working against our nature, or trying to meet expectations that don't actually fit our lives anymore.
In this episode of The 100 Stories Project, I'm joined by Matt for a conversation about business, burnout, self-respect and what it looks like to create success that still leaves room for the people and things we care about.
Matt shares how his own burnout shaped the way he works with people, and why he eventually wrote a book based on the lessons and reflections he'd gathered over the years.
We talk about the pressure to keep achieving, the trap of comparing our behind-the-scenes reality with everyone else's highlight reel, and why slowing down can sometimes help us move forward with more clarity.
We also get into something that really resonated with me: being seen and accepted for who you are, rather than feeling like you need to fit someone else's version of success.
And as a solo mum building a business, I found myself coming back to the same question throughout our chat: what does success actually look like when you consider the life you want to live?
In this episode, we talk about:
Matt's experience of professional burnout in his late 20s
Why working against your nature can leave you exhausted, even when things look successful
How his years of mentoring shaped the reflections and six-stage framework behind his book
The role of compassion, clarity and self-respect in making better decisions
Why comparison can make us feel either superior or not good enough
How slowing down helps us reconnect with our priorities, relationships and work
Finding people who make it feel safe to be yourself
Creating a sustainable pace without giving up meaningful goals

Karen Burgess was just a young Mum when she lost her first husband in a motorbike accident, leaving her to raise their 13-month-old son, Brock.
Years later, she'd found love again, remarried and welcomed her daughter, Jorja. But while pregnant with her youngest son, Darcy, Karen lost her second husband too.
Twice, she found herself picking up the pieces of a life she hadn't expected to live.
In this episode of The 100 Stories Project, I sit down with Karen, founder of On Point Books, for an incredibly moving conversation about grief, motherhood, resilience and building a business that allows you to be there for the people who matter most.
In this episode, we talk about:
Losing two husbands and finding the strength to keep going for her children
Raising Brock, Jorja and Darcy and the pride Karen feels watching them find their own paths
Why she chooses to focus on what she has left rather than what she's lost
Building a career and businesses around being present for her family
How growing up in a family business shaped her understanding of business owners
Why bookkeeping mistakes can become expensive problems when left unchecked
The importance of setting up Xero, GST and payroll correctly from the beginning
When to bring in a bookkeeper and why asking for help doesn't have to be overwhelming
How Karen helps business owners regain confidence and clarity around their finances
One of the things Karen said that stayed with me was.
“I always look at not what we have lost, but what we have left.”
It's a perspective that's carried her through some incredibly difficult moments.
And whether she's talking about life or helping a business owner untangle their books, Karen has another message worth remembering
“Everything's fixable.”

At 20 years old, Brock found himself staring at a credit card statement, realising he didn't even know how to pay it.
Normally, he would have picked up the phone and asked his dad.
But his dad was gone.
In this episode of The 100 Stories Project, I sit down with Brock, the founder of In-House Plants, for an emotional conversation about losing a parent, growing up faster than you expected and finding your own way forward.
From the age of five, Brock's life revolved around motocross. His dad was there for every training session, every race and every big decision. When Brock decided to retire from professional racing at 18, they traded weekends at the track for renovating properties together.
Then, just two years later, Brock lost his dad.
Suddenly, he was navigating grief, family business decisions and responsibilities he'd never imagined taking on so young.
Today, Brock runs In-House Plants, a growing plant hire business that started with one staged property and now looks after thousands of plants across homes, offices and events.
But behind the business is a story about family, resilience and learning that some of life's hardest experiences can change you in ways you never expected.
In this episode, we talk about:
Growing up racing motocross and the bond Brock shared with his dad
Walking away from professional racing and finding a new direction
Losing his dad at 20 and suddenly taking on adult responsibilities
Navigating grief while making difficult decisions about the family businesses
How losing his dad changed Brock's capacity for empathy
Starting a plant hire business without knowing how to look after plants
Growing In-House Plants from one property to around 500 installations a year
Why doing hard things can build resilience and change your perspective
The lessons Brock carries from his dad, including the ones he chose to approach differently

Imagine spending almost your entire life in one place. Growing up there, building friendships, developing your career and believing you'd be part of it forever.
Then watching the culture change so much that you no longer recognise the place you once loved.
That's what happened to Pip.
In this episode of The 100 Stories Project, I sit down with Pip, founder of Premier Team Building and self-proclaimed Facilitator of Awesome, for a conversation about workplace culture, leadership, belonging and what happens when people stop feeling valued.
Growing up in Canada, Pip spent nearly two decades at the same summer camp, progressing from a six-year-old camper to a staff member, educator and director. It was where he felt most at home.
But as the organisation changed, the communication, leadership and culture that once made it special began to disappear. Eventually, Pip bought a one-way ticket to Australia and started again.
Today, he helps businesses create workplaces where people feel safe, supported and genuinely want to stay.
Having experienced Pip's workshops myself, including some brilliant LEGO activities, I wanted to explore why culture matters so much and what business owners can actually do to build it.
In this episode, we talk about:
Growing up in Canada's summer camp culture and finding a sense of belonging
Walking away from a workplace he'd dedicated almost 20 years of his life to
How poor communication and changing leadership can damage workplace culture
The hidden financial and emotional costs of losing good employees
Why Pip believes there's no good or bad culture, only culture that's fit for purpose
The difference between team building and team bonding
Why promoting great employees doesn't automatically make them great leaders
Three practical ways business owners can build stronger teams
How listening, recognising people and acting on feedback builds trust
One of the biggest takeaways from our conversation is that a fun team-building afternoon won't fix years of poor culture.
Real change comes from understanding your people, being clear about where you're going and following through on what you say.
And as Pip reminds us, sometimes the most important thing is having the perseverance to navigate the changing seasons.

At 19, Cody Carroll was on the verge of achieving the dream he'd worked towards since he was a little boy... becoming a professional footballer.
He was captaining the Newcastle Jets youth team, training with the A-League squad and making his family proud. But when his dad was diagnosed with stage four cancer, everything began to change.
Cody promised his dad he'd never miss a training session or game because of him. Not long after, Cody became seriously ill during an overseas football tour, and his dad passed away.
What followed were some of the darkest years of his life.
In this episode of The 100 Stories Project, I'm joined by Cody, his partner Jess and their 8-month-old son Hudson for an incredibly honest conversation about grief, addiction, mental health, parenthood and rebuilding a life you're proud of.
Cody opens up about struggling with depression, gambling and substance use after losing his dad, and the moment he realised he needed to ask for help and make a change.
Today, Cody and Jess are building The Pronto Junk Team, a Newcastle-based junk removal business grounded in empathy, community and helping people without judgement.
We also hear from Jess about her experience with postnatal depression and anxiety, and how becoming parents changed the way they approached their business, their relationship and supporting each other.
In this episode, we talk about:
Cody's football dreams and the promise he made to his dad
Losing his father at 19 and the years of grief and addiction that followed
The turning point that led him to seek professional help
Rebuilding his life through sobriety, discipline and a stronger sense of purpose
How becoming a dad to Hudson changed what success means to him
Jess's experience with a difficult birth and postnatal depression
Making changes in their business so they could support each other as parents
Why The Pronto Junk Team leads with empathy, kindness and giving back
One of the most powerful parts of Cody's story is how his reason for changing has evolved.
At first, he wanted to make his dad proud.
Now, he wants to make himself proud and become the kind of father Hudson can look up to, just as Cody once looked up to his own dad.

What happens when you've spent years working on yourself, you understand your patterns and triggers, but you still find yourself reacting in the same ways?
In this episode of The 100 Stories Project, I sit down with Sarah Scully-Leaf in Bali for one of my most personal conversations yet.
Sarah is a coach specialising in nervous system work, breathwork, hypnotherapy and somatic practices. But her work comes from lived experience. After navigating an abusive relationship, PTSD, chronic pain and the pressures of a demanding career in corporate law, she began exploring a different approach to healing.
It's a journey that eventually led her to build a new life and business in Bali, helping others explore what it means to feel safe, grounded and more connected to themselves.
Sarah and I had been working together for months before this conversation. I share some of my own experiences with PTSD, grief, separation and learning to trust myself again, including the unexpected decisions I made during my birthday trip to Bali.
We talk about why self-awareness doesn't always create change, what it means to build your capacity for discomfort and how small choices can become significant turning points.
In this episode, we talk about:
Sarah's journey from corporate law, PTSD and chronic pain to the work she does today
Why understanding your triggers doesn't always change your reactions
Nervous system regulation and recognising your body's early signs of stress
Breathwork, hypnotherapy and the role of somatic practices in Sarah's approach
Building the capacity to set boundaries and have difficult conversations
Letting go of people-pleasing and learning to trust your own decisions
How our work together influenced my experience in Bali
Finding joy and creating a life that feels good beyond work and achievement
One of Sarah's messages that stayed with me was:
“Life gets to be greater than you can possibly imagine for yourself.”
And sometimes the biggest changes begin with the smallest decisions.

Most parents think getting their child ready for school means teaching them to write their name, recognise letters and count numbers.
But what about having the confidence to walk into a classroom, make a friend, ask for help or cope when something doesn't go their way?
In this episode of The 100 Stories Project, I sit down with sisters Emma and Susan, the founders of Set for School, to talk about what school readiness really looks like and why the skills we often overlook can make the biggest difference.
With backgrounds in early childhood and primary education, Emma and Susan saw children arriving at school who were struggling with confidence, independence and emotional regulation. They created Set for School to help children build those foundations through play, small-group learning and practical experiences.
As a Mum preparing Archie for his own school journey, this conversation was a personal one for me too. And if you've got a little one approaching big school, Emma and Susan offer a free trial session so you can experience what Set for School is all about.
In this episode, we talk about:
Why school readiness is about much more than reading and writing
The confidence, independence and resilience children need before kindergarten
Helping children manage big emotions, separation anxiety and new friendships
Simple everyday activities that build fine motor skills and self-confidence
Why letting children struggle, lose a game or try something difficult matters
Practical ways busy parents can prepare their children for school
When to start thinking about school readiness and how to recognise when extra support might help
Emma and Susan's biggest message to parents?
“Trust your instincts. You know your child.”
Because there's no perfect parenting handbook, and sometimes the most important thing we can do is give our children the time, support and confidence to find their feet.
Wondering how your little one would go in a school readiness class?
Emma and Susan offer a FREE trial session at their Queens Park studio in Sydney, where your child can experience their small-group, play-based approach to building confidence and independence.

From the outside, Damian Jones looks like he's kicking goals. He's built Pumped Plumbing into a million-dollar business, has a growing team and is raising three young children with his partner.
But behind the success is a lot of pressure that most people never see.
In this episode of The 100 Stories Project, I sit down with Damian for an honest, often hilarious conversation about what it really takes to build a trade business while trying to be a present dad, a good partner and a leader his team can count on.
Growing up watching his parents work long hours running restaurants, Damian never wanted to own a business. But when an opportunity came along, he left his full-time job, took a chance on himself and figured things out along the way.
We talk about the stress behind the numbers, building a team that feels like family, learning to understand his emotions and why asking for help has made him a better dad and business owner.
In this episode, we talk about:
Taking the leap into business with a mortgage and a growing family
The hidden pressures behind reaching a million dollars in revenue
Building a team culture based on trust, loyalty and looking after each other
Challenging the idea that men and tradies need to suppress their emotions
Why seeing a psychologist has changed the way Damian leads and parents
Showing up authentically on social media and attracting the right customers
Making time for family while growing a demanding business
Damian's advice to anyone thinking about taking a chance on themselves?
“Give it a fucking go.”
Because sometimes you don't need to have everything figured out before you start.

Annelise McCarthy remembers sitting on the floor in front of her bedroom mirror, placing her hand against the glass and crying. For the first time, she wasn't picking herself apart. She was finally seeing the woman who'd spent years trying to hold everything together.
In this episode of The 100 Stories Project, I sit down with Annelise, known as Her Speaking Coach, for a deeply personal conversation recorded in Bali.
Today, she helps women find the confidence to use their voices. But behind that confidence is a story of growing up with a speech impediment, struggling with an eating disorder, pursuing a career in law and learning that her worth wasn't measured by what she achieved.
We talk about the moment she began changing the way she spoke to herself, how she learned to trust who she was and why finding your voice starts long before you step onto a stage.
In this episode, we talk about:
Growing up with a speech impediment and struggling with self-worth
Her experience with an eating disorder and negative self-talk
The moment in front of the mirror that changed everything
Leaving behind the expectations she'd built her life around
Taking herself on a Valentine's Day date and learning to enjoy her own company
Why self-trust matters more than being a perfect speaker

What if one day your child wanted to know who you were, but you weren't there to tell them?
That's the question that started everything.
In the very first episode of The 100 Stories Project, I'm sharing the story behind the podcast and why a book I started writing for my three-year-old son, Archie, has grown into something much bigger than I ever imagined.
As a solo Mum, I've thought a lot about the stories Archie might remember about me as he grows up. The little moments, the big decisions, the mistakes I've made and the experiences that have shaped who I am.
I started writing them down because I wanted him to have something in my own words. Stories about our life together, my time in the police, building businesses, separation, starting again and all the things I hope we'll get to talk about as he grows older.
And somewhere along the way, I started wondering how many other people had stories they'd never really had the chance to tell.
That's where The 100 Stories Project began.
I'm on a mission to sit down with 100 people and capture the conversations that don't usually make it onto a business website or social media profile.
The experiences that changed them. The people they've lost. The things they've built, the things that haven't worked out and the lessons they've carried with them.
In this episode, I share:
Why I started writing 100 stories for Archie
What being a solo mum has taught me about the life and business I want to build
How my experiences in policing, business and starting again have shaped me
Why I believe our stories deserve to be told in our own voices
How a personal writing project became The 100 Stories Project
What you can expect from the next 100 conversations
And if there's one thing I hope you take away from it, it's that you don't need to have an extraordinary life to have a story worth sharing.
Sometimes the most meaningful stories are the ones we haven't thought to tell.
100 People. 100 Conversations. 100 Stories Worth Remembering.
