My trip to the Laguna Beach chapter of Writers Round in late June did not disappoint. Between the delicious tacos from Laguna Beer Company and a stacked lineup of talent, it was a night to remember. One standout was Brooke Bowker, who came highly recommended by guest host Rod Harrison—and he was spot on. Bonus points for the Comedy Bang! Bang! t-shirt. I’m featuring her song “Plant a Tree” because it hits so many of the notes I love and has me hyped for what she puts out next. Hope you dig it.

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Bobbo Byrnes perform three times now—most recently at Writers Round Fullerton—but it was his set at Writers Round Laguna that really sealed the deal for me. What I love most is the storytelling, not just in his songs but in the way he performs them. With a pretty extensive catalog to choose from, I landed on “Bad Decisions.” Hope you dig it.

There’s some debate about how I first came across The Psychotic Reactions. As I remember it, Producer Rod and I were driving back from a wedding, heading north on the 5, passing the San Onofre boobs (Google it), when one of their songs came on. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Their sound gives me hints of 110 Pod alums The Hags and Leah Lou & the 2 Left Shoes. For this episode, I’m featuring the title track from their 2025 album Don’t Take My Side, but don’t stop there. Their last two albums were on heavy rotation for me, and their whole discography is well worth diving into.

In this episode, I’m diving into “Soft Hands” by Vampire Boyfriend—a track I absolutely love and one I’m pretty sure I discovered through sewerbitch’s Spotify radio. Vampire Boyfriend describes their music as fictional, horror, niche, storytelling, and this song totally lives up to that eerie and evocative vibe. Sadly, they’re based in the Netherlands (I think), so catching them live might be more dream than reality for me.

The series of events that lead to me meeting Charles Grace is pretty wild. We crossed paths at Rod Harrison’s Saturday Night Showcase at the Night Owl in Fullerton. We hit it off right away and became fast friends. A week later, he joined Rod and I as a guest on the Listening Party Podcast, check out his episode when it’s released July 7th. It was a no brainer I would feature him on this podcast as well. The only question was, which song? I went with “Pillar to Post” off his 2020 album, The Wreckage. Hope you dig it.
