The 2026 White House Correspondents' Dinner Shooting

Listen Later

On the evening of April 25, 2026, a shooting occurred at the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner at the Washington Hilton hotel in Washington, D.C.. Around 8:35 to 8:40 p.m. EDT, a lone gunman charged a Secret Service magnetometer screening area located in the lobby just outside the main ballroom, where approximately 2,600 attendees were gathered. The attacker was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives. Upon breaching the checkpoint, he fired several shots before being swiftly intercepted, tackled to the ground, and handcuffed by law enforcement officers. One Secret Service agent was struck during the gunfire but survived because of a bullet-resistant vest, and is expected to make a full recovery. No other injuries were reported, and the suspect, while unharmed, was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.Inside the ballroom, the sound of gunfire prompted Secret Service agents to yell warnings, causing hundreds of guests, including prominent journalists and government officials, to take cover under their tables. President Donald Trump, who was seated at the head table on stage, along with First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and several Cabinet members, were immediately surrounded by armed guards and evacuated to secure holding areas before departing for the White House. The suspect was identified as 31-year-old Cole Thomas Allen from Torrance, California. Allen checked into the Washington Hilton as a regular hotel guest, which allowed him to bypass the outermost security layers before assembling his weapons in a guest room. He is a highly educated California Institute of Technology (Caltech) alumnus with a degree in mechanical engineering, a former NASA research fellow, and a master's graduate in computer engineering. Outwardly appearing as a typical professional, Allen worked as a part-time tutor and test prep teacher, having recently been recognized as "Teacher of the Month," and developed independent video games as a hobby. Following his arrest, the suspect allegedly told law enforcement that he intended to target administration officials. He faces federal charges, including the use of a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon.Following the evacuation, the dinner was officially canceled for the evening, with plans to reschedule the event within 30 days. In a subsequent press conference from the White House, President Trump praised the swift response of the Secret Service and law enforcement. He described the attacker as a "lone wolf" and a "sick person" who attacked the Constitution, while also asserting that the incident would not deter him from his political goals. The attack marked the third major security threat involving the President in recent years and took place at the exact hotel where President Ronald Reagan survived an assassination attempt in 1981.
