Charlotte is growing fast—and with that growth comes an important question: how do we move more than a million people across a region that spans hundreds of square miles?
Public transit plays a critical role in connecting people to jobs, healthcare, education, and opportunity. Here in Mecklenburg County, the Charlotte Area Transit System, better known as CATS, operates dozens of bus routes, light rail lines, paratransit services, and emerging microtransit options that together deliver millions of trips every year.
But as Charlotte continues to expand, so does the conversation about how transit should grow with it. Voters recently approved significant transportation funding aimed at shaping the future of mobility in our region—while also raising questions about how those investments will impact communities across the city.
We talked to Brett Baldeck, Communications Manager with Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS).
