Imagine losing every photo, document, and file you own in an instant. It happens more often than you think—and usually to people who believed it could never happen to them. The 3-2-1 backup rule is your insurance policy against digital disasters, and it's surprisingly simple:

  • 3: Keep three copies of your data. This includes the original data plus two backup copies.
  • 2: Use two different types of media for these backups. For example, one could be on an external hard drive, and the other on a cloud storage service or a different type of physical medium like tape. This reduces the risk of data loss due to media failure.
  • 1: Maintain one copy off-site. This ensures that in case of disasters like fires, floods, or theft at your primary location, you still have access to your data. Cloud storage often serves this purpose, but physical off-site storage like a safe deposit box can also be used.
