Our self-image is simply the way we see ourselves and that defines who we are. But self-image is more than just an idea or a picture we have of ourselves. It goes way deeper than that and involves not only our minds, but also our hearts and emotions. My self-image, at its core, tells me who I am. It’s my identity. The reason it’s so important is because it fuels my motives, my motivations, and my behaviors. When I have a healthy view of myself and who I am, I don’t have anything to prove and I don’t have anything to hide. That is true freedom. When I have a skewed view of who I am, I spend most of my energies on trying to prove something to myself or to someone else. Or on keeping secrets, hoping that no one will ever discover the truth about the real me. This is why being hyper aware of how we see ourselves is so important.
