The 49ers Can't Catch a Break at Quarterback

Listen Later

On the latest episode of The 415ers, hosts Evan Giddings and Marc Grandi discuss the latest drama swirling around the San Francisco 49ers' quarterback position.

(0:58) Brock Purdy suffered a torn UCL in his right elbow. The San Francisco 49ers are recommending surgery, but not the full UCL reconstruction (also known as 'Tommy John'), which would sideline him for an entire year. Rather, the 49ers think Purdy only needs UCL repair surgery, which would require a six-month recovery process before he was ready to practice and play fully without any limitations. What does this news mean for San Francisco's offseason? Might they look to improve their quarterback position from the outside?

(18:02) An outside option at quarterback was Tom Brady, but he announced his retirement 'for good' early Wednesday morning. The guys discuss his career if this is indeed the end and debate how his decision impacts the 49ers' offseason as they try to figure out their quarterback room before making any other offseason moves.

(31:04) Plus, the guys discuss Purdy's toughness and how silly arguments to the contrary were. But considering his injury, will he be the 49ers' Week 1 start in 2023? Who is more likely to start that game: Purdy or Trey Lance? Is a Jimmy Garoppolo return possible again?
