Air Crash Chronicles

The 747 That Flew Sideways

Listen Later

Northwest Airlines Flight 85 faced a critical in-flight emergency when a lower rudder hardover suddenly compromised control of the aircraft during a transpacific journey. With no established procedures to handle such a failure, the crew was forced to rely entirely on skill, coordination, and quick thinking.
Battling the jammed controls required constant physical effort, as the pilots used engine thrust and manual inputs to counter the aircraft’s movements. The augmented crew worked together seamlessly, sharing the workload and developing a strategy in real time to keep the aircraft stable.
Despite the immense pressure and exhaustion, the crew successfully diverted to Anchorage and executed a safe landing, with all 404 people on board surviving without injury. Investigators later traced the issue to a failure within the rudder’s power control system, leading to fleet-wide modifications to prevent similar incidents.
The event stands as a powerful example of exceptional airmanship, teamwork, and the importance of redundancy in modern aircraft design.
