A Literary Thriller That Really Thrills
This book starts with a bang (literally) when grieving reporter Danny Ryan's friend Michael Cohen crashes his car through Danny's fence, right into his pond. Michael then proceeds to mess up Danny's life further by whispering something cryptic, then dying with a bullet in his gut.
Sarah Cain builds up a rich world for Danny to inhabit as he investigates the cryptic clue Michael left him, while trying to come back to life after spending a year mourning his wife and son's deaths in an accident.
Danny delves into the underbelly of the high society of Philadelphia and its Main Line, revisits the violent ghosts of his South Philly childhood, and uncovers some truly terrifying connections on his way to a climax that had my pulse pounding.
I stayed up way too late to finish this book because I couldn't NOT. And then, unlike so many thrillers, it ended really, really well, leaving me sighing as I turned the last page.
Beautiful, terrifying writing. And I may have developed a crush on Danny Ryan...
A marvelous debut!!
Danny Ryan, hot-shot Philadelphia journalist, is still mourning the loss of his wife and child when his good friend, Michael, crashes into his duckpond and dies with the word "Inferno' on his lips. Thus begins this tautly-written thrill ride into the dark underbelly of Philadelphia's aristocracy. Danny's search for the truth about his friend's murder sends him into the bowels of hell, where events of the past steamroll into a present filled with one disturbing discovery after another, where the good guys and the bad guys are hard to tell apart, and where the line between the two is often blurred. This is a story about loyalty and love, and about how heroism can sometimes look like betrayal. A page-turner that will make you hope that Danny Ryan makes another appearance soon.
A new favorite author & hero
Saw an advertisement for author Sarah Cain's upcoming 2017 release "One by One" which seems intriguing. After pre-ordering, I researched Sarah Cain and found her introductory novel "The 8th Circle" was released in 2016 and had favorable reviews.
Definitely a solid thriller. A dark plot line with plenty of twists and turns. A journalist recovering from loss serves as an unlikely hero set against the background of Philadelphia and suburbs. A good mix of politics, power, crimes and cover-ups weave together into a "can't put down" page turner. Highly recommend picking this one up -a new favorite author & hero.
