Joe's romance with Maize is introduced and exhibited during the first part of the movie. It does seem to take a bit for the carnage to start for those that are waiting. But this method enables us get to know Joe, which makes us care about how this story turns out—especially when the gunfire and bloodshed begin. Bautista has expanded his acting repertoire in recent years by playing parts other than "big guy crushes skulls." This appears to be a return to that, but Bautista also gets to try his hand at playing the romantic lead role in a romantic comedy. When it comes to that genre, he and Boutella might not be the first people that come to mind.
