Publisher's Summary:
"I was fourteen when my Mother said that she needed to speak to me.... And then she told me - just like that. I was adopted. And what I felt was not shock or grief but the most enormous sense of relief." Growing up as the only child of strict, God-fearing parents, Lucilla has always felt her difference. But it is not till adulthood that she discovers the real reasons behind her adopted mother's often violent indifference. As for Harriet, she would have readily sent her longed for baby back if she could, having discovered she falls all too short of her expectations. And then there is Bethan, a young girl in 1940s Wales, whose only mistake is falling in love with the wrong man....
Members Reviews:
interesting and familiar!
Personally, for the first few chapters, I found it quite hard to follow. And it seemed to me that Anne was trying too hard, too many big, complicated and unusual words, almost as if she had a dictionary on hand deliberately searching for alternative/ impressive sounding ways for everyday words! I don't believe anyone talks in this way and it made reading it quite laborious!
Fortunately, this seemed to get less further into the book, almost as if she started to tire of it.
The story of a baby of a German POW adopted by parents in which the mother prejudged her from day one and treated her accordingly throughout her life, letying her know she was a disappointment, she never stood a chance! I can relate to this experience so have an idea how it feels and how it can affect you throughout life, even though I was not adopted! So, personally, this book touched certain cords within!
It's an important message for all parents out there!
I really enjoyed how the chapters were organised, although, sometimes a little confusing! Each chapter was told from the perspective of one of the characters, mainly the adopting mother and the child both as a child and an adult!
From a hard to read beginning to an increasingly "can't put you down" book from half way onwards and an almost disappointing ending with a surprising heart lifting twist at the end!
I would have given this book 5 stars if not for the complicated language at the start, however, I highly recommend giving it a go!
Too slow for me
Unfortunately I found this book to ramble on and on and get nowhere fast. It was slow and wandered from one person to another all the time and just didn't hold my interest at all. I didn't even finish it even though I ended up skim reading a number of chapters. I moved onto a far more interesting book instead. Sorry, but it just didn't " cut the mustard"
Four Stars
Great story, though ending was a little weak.
Two Stars
A bit drawn out, quick ending.
The adoption
I always enjoy an Anne Berry book. I just wish she could write more books! Last one I read was The Hungry Ghosts and it too
Was a five star book!
Carry on writing Anne! Already waiting for your next one. I am a two books a week reader.
