Publisher's Summary:
Luther battles against the Disruptors in a parallel world where many things are familiar - but nothing is the same. The alternative England where Luther fights the Disruptors did not see the monarchy restored after the English Civil War and has been under the rule of the Puritan Parliamentarians for hundreds of years.
Led by a direct descendant of Oliver Cromwell, England is ripe for the taking by European superpowers that are preparing to invade. Many in England dream of past glories and an empire ruled by the long exiled Kings and Queens of England. A second civil war is brewing, its aim to bring Prince Charles to the throne, and Luther must help to ensure that the right side wins - not just for the sake of this world but for all worlds.
Written by Bryan Talbot; adapted by Mark Wright. Directed by Jason Haigh-Ellery.
Members Reviews:
prepare to read long and thoroughly and repeatedly. but this volume omits all bonus material.
contains all 12 of the miniseries of the same title, all writing and artwork by bryan talbot. minus the additional bonus material that appeared in the original comic books.
first, i took away 1 star because of a few problems with the publishing. this seems like too many pages for a paperback binding, because the binding on mine has already begun to crack and threatens to lose pages. this could be solved be releasing a hardcover edition with the cloth, stitch and glue binding, which i would gladly buy.
secondly, pages 97 - 108 are repeated, meaning there are 2 of this sequence of pages. how could that have gone overlooked? since the story is about alternate similar timelines and dimensions, i thought it might be intentional, but it wasn't intentional, because the page numbers repeat as well.
thirdly, i have nearly all of the original comics, which have a lot of bonus material not featured here. one thing missing is a breathtaking full page illustration of arkwright walking side by side with a woman through a grove of trees covered with ivy. this image stands with the best etchings that history has to offer, with an incredible amount of detail and the perfectly achieved illusion of deep distance. even though it's black and white, it is one of the most profound depictions or expressions of light i've ever seen, as it filters through the trees. it's so beautiful i'd gladly frame it and hang it on the wall.
and as good as that image i just described is, it was omitted from this book. even though it fit perfectly with the narrative, and even though they included 11 unnecessarily repeated pages.
those 11 pages which appear twice due to a publishing error should have been devoted to including all the bonus material that appeared in the dark horse comic books.
aside from those publishing issues, the content is unique and rare high quality.
***** here is a much more thorough list of the bonus features which appeared in the 9-issue miniseries as published by dark horse comics, none of which appear in this trade paperback.
issue # 3 included a 4 page essay with illustrations titled "octobriana: myth or legend" by trina robbins.
