Often God uses adversity to test the faithfulness of His people.  For instance Job and Joseph were tested as well as Abraham who demonstrated that he was willing to part with the blessing of his son Isaac for the sake of his relationship with the Blesser, God.  The Bible says in Acts 14:22 "we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God."
