Thomas Billingsley was on the second to last C-17 out of Afghanistan in August 2021. In the weeks leading up to the withdrawal, Thomas was supposed to be in country for up to one year assisting operations at the US embassy and at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul. As the situation deteriorated and the Taliban advanced, Thomas and his team of 150 State Department coworkers and 2,000 Marines had to adapt - and help evacuate tens of thousands of people in a couple weeks. Thomas Billingsley details his experience in the one of the largest airlift evacuations in history. He can be reached at [email protected].
