The AGI today does not mean AGI of Tomorrow

Listen Later

The idea that our present actions and perceptions entirely shape the future assumes a level of control over outcomes that may not exist. Deterministic views suggest that events are predetermined by prior states of the universe, meaning that our present choices might be less significant than we believe. The notion that our actions today will dictate the future is problematic because the future cannot be predict accurately in all cases.

Economic downturns, natural disasters, and societal shifts can disrupt even the most carefully laid plans. For instance, a person may pursue a specific career path based on current trends, only to find that market forces or technological advancements render that path obsolete.

The reduction of future possibilities to mere extensions of present actions oversimplifies the complexities of how time functions. Events can unfold in unpredictable ways that cannot be anticipated or controlled, thus undermining the notion that the future is merely a continuation of the present.

Additionally, we can question the very premise of knowing or understanding the future based on present knowledge. Predictions about the future are often fraught with uncertainty and subject to revision. This skepticism highlights the limitations of our ability to truly embed the future within the present when our perceptions can be flawed or incomplete.

In this context, making a prediction about the value of artificial general intelligence in the future becomes challenging. While the actions taken today in AI research and development are important, they are influenced by a multitude of factors—some of which are beyond our control. The rapid pace of technological change, societal needs, ethical considerations, and unforeseen events can all shape the trajectory of AGI in ways we cannot fully anticipate.

Thus, while we can recognize the potential benefits and challenges of AGI, we must also acknowledge the complexities and uncertainties that make it difficult to predict its future value with certainty. Embracing this uncertainty allows for a more nuanced understanding of AGI's evolution and the various factors that will influence its integration into society.
