God tests Abraham, commanding him to take his son Isaac, whom he loves, to the land of Moriah and offer him as a burnt offering on a mountain. Abraham obeys without hesitation. At the critical moment, as Abraham raises the knife, an angel of YHWH intervenes, stopping him. A ram caught in a thicket is provided as a substitute sacrifice.
