The Amazing Case

On this episode of The Amazing Case, Cooper and Taylah chat to 4th year Deakin medical student and Medusa club president Rachel Tobin. Rachel spent her clinical years at Geelong's University Hospital and will begin her internship at Royal Melbourne in 2023. 

The podcast explores all the big questions about the medical student journey and delves into what makes working in the Emergency Department so unique.

Rafi Uddin is an Aussie expat working in the UK, and one of only a few paramedics to have a ballistic vest as part of his daily equipment. He is a member of his service’s specialist ‘tactical response unit’, working to expedite care of patients involved in police incidents. In this episode, Rafi walks us through his approach as first on scene to a major trauma case, and discusses principles of scene management, impromptu teams, trauma assessment and treatment.

In this episode, we talk to Kayla Brolly, an ED registered nurse and a key member of North Shore Rescue. Kayla shares with us her experiences during an interesting avalanche rescue call which has stuck with her through the years and is a good reminder of why people get into emergency medicine and critical care and the impact that you can have on someone’s life.

In this episode we chat with Associate Professor Douglas Stupart. Mr. Stupart was originally trained in Cape Town in South Africa and is now a general surgeon in Geelong, Australia and heavily involved in mentoring and training student doctors at University Hospital. This case aims to challenge preconceptions about living with an ileostomy, and what informed consent really means.

In this episode, Canadian expat and MICA paramedic Kyle Lee shares a tale of a situation where he was faced with "Can't Ventilate, Can't Intubate"; something that would be daunting for any training doctor in the hospital setting, only Kyle was in the back of an Ambulance - Crikey... In this episode, Dr. Andrew McMahon, an SRMO in the ICU, talks to us all the way from sunny Queensland about the ins-and-outs of how he and his team managed an out of hospital and unwitnessed cardiac arrest patient that was brought to the ICU. Andrew also shares some solid truths about why ICU exists, and what junior doctors should think about before making a referral.

The EMD team from Deakin University excited to bring you our third episode of the emergency medicine podcast, The Amazing Case.

This episode we speak to Geelong's Dr. Chris Mobbs about a case that pulled the heart strings (lung strings?) and reminds us of those tricky end of life conversations, and the difference that a day or two on this Earth can make to friends and families. During the case he also takes the time to talk us through chest drains, with some tips and tricks for good landmarks to use. Dr. Mobbs has an eclectic set of interests outside medicine and is currently one of EMD's academic mentors, and at his request, we have read the letter he mentions and added the end of the recording.
