Professor Stephen Gill (Lincoln College, Oxford)

'A Sea Rolling High': Wordsworth in 1804.

The lecture will focus on the emergence of one of Wordsworth’s greatest poems, the ‘Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood’, on its place within a cluster of poetry in 1804 about childhood and innocence, and on the importance of the ‘Ode’ in Wordsworth’s developing religious thought.

Stephen Gill is an Emeritus Professor of English Literature at Oxford University and a Fellow of Lincoln College. He has been for many years a member of the Wordsworth Trust. He is the author of William Wordsworth: A Life (1989), Wordsworth and the Victorians (1998) and more recently Wordsworth’s Revisitings (2011).
