What qualities would any student need if they were going live in the real world right now as adults? I’m talking about the basics, but, these behaviors are so important to the lifelong success of any individual. What are the five behaviors that I discovered? When I started to enforce the rules around these behaviors things started to change and change quickly.
I discovered that everyone not only kids need to develop these five qualities
All students had to have a high regard for the rights and privileges of another person: RESPECT
All students had to learn how to follow through on a task and what the consequence would be if they didn’t: RESPONSIBILITY
We all live in the same world and in order to get along we have to develop RELATIONSHIPS with key people in our lives and understand how to nourish those relationships so they grow and flourish
I needed to help my students and others realize that if they fail it doesn’t make them a failure and how not to be discouraged by a low test score or a sports related issue. RESILENCY
Society requires COMPLIANCE from those in authority all the time; teachers, parents, law enforcement, employers. Compliance is doing what you are told when you are told to do it with a good attitude.
Once I started focusing on these 5 areas and built my rules around these qualities a few things happened
1. The school climate changed
2. I had less discipline referrals
3. Kids did what they were told
4. The school was a kinder place
5. And Kids seemed to be able to handle the truth better regarding grades and behavior
