In 1901, divers recovering ancient objects from a shipwreck near the Greek island of Antikythera discovered corroded bronze fragments containing something extraordinary. Hidden inside were precision gears from a machine built more than two thousand years ago. ([Eθνικό Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο][1])
Modern imaging has revealed that the Antikythera Mechanism was an extraordinarily sophisticated astronomical calculator. It tracked calendars and celestial cycles, predicted eclipses, and may have displayed the movements of several celestial bodies. Yet only about one third of the original machine survives, leaving researchers to reconstruct much of its design from fragments and inscriptions. ([Nature][2])
The mystery is no longer whether ancient Greeks could build such a machine. It is how this level of mechanical knowledge developed, and why so little comparable technology survived.
