In Edgar Allan Poe's "The Assignation," set in Venice, the narrator witnesses a mysterious, unnamed stranger rescue the young child of the beautiful Marchesa Aphrodite from drowning. A strong, unspoken connection exists between the stranger and the Marchesa, who is trapped in a marriage with the elderly Mentoni, culminating in a brief, cryptic agreement for them to meet shortly after sunrise. The following morning, the narrator visits the stranger in his incredibly opulent and eccentric apartment, where the man speaks philosophically yet agitatedly about art, dreams, and death. As the appointed hour arrives, news breaks that the Marchesa has died from poisoning, and simultaneously, the narrator discovers the stranger has also died, having poisoned himself, fulfilling their dark and tragic assignation to reunite in death.
